Lake District

Stickle Tarn via Stickle Ghyll

After several heavy bouts of rain overnight it was not raining when I woke up this morning. The plan was for an early start so we could get across to Langdale and get a parking space in the car park opposite the hotel – which is the nearest one to the start of the path. This meant setting the alarm for when it was still dark. Richard got up and walked across to the cabin to sort his breakfast – I stayed in my tent and had breakfast in bed.

We did get a good parking space, we were second in the car park – and set off at about 9am in what would prove to be variable weather. Some sun, a bit overcast, a few drops of rain and one heavier spell that lasted five minutes and even fog. But no wind and it was not cold.

We were in no hurry so about 10.30am we stopped for tea and cakes – just by the bridge that takes you over Stickle Ghyll.

I was using my Golite backing sack as a daypack – obviously nearly empty but a very comfortable bag to carry.

We stopped for more tea at Stickle Tarn – where the sun came out and then the fog drifted in.

We were down at about 4pm having had an excellent day on the hills.

The Lake District pt1

We got to Kendal at about 3pm – a bit late for a cooked breakfast – but fine for a homemade cheese scone and tea.

We are camping at the Windermere Camping and Caravan Club site – which is between Kendal and Windermere. We got the tents up – and then had a short walk to catch some of the colours in the sky.

We cooked and ate our dinner in the Backpackers Hut and whilst in there there was a hail downpour.

Backpacking this weekend

I had been planning to walk to Woodhall Spa this weekend, but following the BBC weather forecast yesterday I quickly changed my plans to a trip to the Lake District.

So the plan is to climb the Old Man of Coniston and then find somewhere to camp tonight.

We left Lincoln at about 4.30am and have now stopped in Lancaster. This gives Richard a chance to reset the multiple controls on his G12.

As with all good walking trips this one features an English Breakfast.

Overnight trip to the Old Man of Coniston

Next weekend I am planning a backpacking trip to the Lake Dustrict, with a couple of friends, to walk up the Old Man of Coniston with an overnight camp – depending on the weather. (Click on the map for a larger version).

Old Man of Conniston

The main reason for going away is to spend the weekend taking photographs – so we are taking a tripod with us and I am going to try my hand at some video on my iPhone. I have a bracket to mount my iPhone on a tripod.

This weekend I have been sorting the gear.

  • I will get to try out my second inflatable pillow!
  • I am going to take my MSR Pocket Rocket stove with a 100g cannister – I have not yet used it on an overnight trip
  • I am going to test using a Molle water bottle pouch to carry my lunch and brew kit – fixed to the hip belt or compression strap on the Golite Jam2

Molle Water Bottle Pouch

  • I am going to pack the titanium meths stove and 50ml of meths in the Molle pouch – for hot drinks whilst walking
