Photo for Smart Thinking

Today’s photo is for a blog due out next week on our Security, Governance and Compliance website – SmartThinking.Solutions

The article is raising questions about Apple’s proposal for all images stored in the iCloud to be scanned for CSAM. I will add the link to article here next week.

For the blog it will have a text overlay added using the markup function in Apple Photos on my phone. The larger screen of the iPhone 12 Pro Max makes it easy to do this type of photo editing. Meaning I can run my blogs and websites from my smartphone.

Remote Working – My office today…

I have come away this weekend as Octagon has a number of weekend projects scheduled over the coming weeks; but I also have some presentations to work on. So for today this is my office.

Remote working Octagon Technology - St Neots Camping and Caravan Club Site

Remote Working

Not only does remote working mean that our team can work from home, or client sites, or from the local wifi cafe. But especially for Diana and myself we can access our systems and information whilst we are away on holiday.

Read Octagon’s article about remote working which includes top tips and advice on how you can benefit from it.

On my agenda today:

  • Email and team scheduling using our secure hosted exchange
  • Collecting photos and other information for the presentations
  • Preparing the slides on my iPad using Microsoft PowerPoint connected to our OneDrive whilst writing my speaking notes using OneNote on my iPod
  • Phone meetings with both Kamila and Martin
  • A walk along the river into St Neots to find a good tea shop

Phone brackets and charging point in my MX-5

Whilst remote working to keep everything charged I have a USB charge plug in my MX-5 that supplies both 1A, for my phone and iPod and 2.1A for my iPad.

When the phone is in this bracket it is easy to use it as a personal hotspot so my wifi enabled devices can get on the Internet, this saves multiple SIM card costs.

Add to these my collection of tech gadgets, cables, brackets and chargers, a multi-coloured pen and a hard cover A5 notebook and I have everything with me to work away from home.

For the BlogPad Pro Team

I have been in email contact with the team at BlogPadPro who have been very helpful in dealing with some issues I had with my sites. The support they have provide has been first class. I emailed them late in our business day, and they responded quickly and continued to respond all evening until they got to the final answer, which was a theme issue.

Loading gpx Files into Memory Map on the iPhone

Since writing this article I now follow the same process but keep the files in my Microsoft OneDrive.

One big difference between the versions of Memory-Map on my old Windows 6.5 phone and my current iPhone is the way they handle imported routes from the PC version of the software. The Windows version simply connected to the complete route library in the PC application, then on the phone you could choose which routes from that list to show, turning them on and off as required. On the iPhone you have to load the routes individually and once you have finished with that route unload it and then load another (keeping too many routes loaded at one time impacts the performance of the app). The “Save as” gpx file in Memory-Map PC version solves the problem.

But the issue is getting the routes into the app from Memory-Map on the PC. The first thing you have to do is save the individual routes as gpx files on your PC. In my Memory-Map I have a category for Lincolnshire – which has over sixty entries, both routes and location markers – if I save the whole of this category as a gpx file when I open it on the iPhone it is too confusing on the screen to be useful – another reason to limit the open routes/markers on the iPhone.

In the knowledge base on the Memory-Map website it describes how to email gpx files to your iPhone for use in the Memory-Map app. However I use my Dropbox account to transfer (and store) my gpx routes and markers.

It is easy to save gpx files on my PC with descriptive names, into a Dropbox folder, these then synchronise to my Dropbox online. Using the Dropbox app on my iPhone I can access the files.

These files are opened in Dropbox, by tapping on them – they open as text files. By then tapping on the “open in” icon I can choose to open the file in Memory-Map.

The gpx file is loded into the Marks and Routes section of the Memory-Map app.

From there it can be opened and used on a map.

I have a number of gpx files available for free download here – more are always being added.

Documents To Go – iPhone

I have just discovered something really annoying about Documents To Go on my iPhone 4. I cannot copy and paste information from Safari into a DTG spreadsheet. I also tried copying the same list from a GoodReader text file into the spreadsheet and that did not work either. I’ll have to get someone in the office to create the spreadsheet and put it in the drop box – I can then get it from there using Documents To Go.

The office versions offered in DTG are cut down versions but they have nearly all the functionality I need – if you are going to use this software then get the slightly more expensive Premium version so you can link it to your online storage and you get support for PowerPoint.

I recommend this software to all our clients who want to use their iPhone or iPad for work (or other smartphone, my engineers use the Android version on their phones). My son has it on his iPod Touch for keeping up with his homework whilst away, without having to take a laptop. (He links to the internet via the personal hotspot on my iPhone when he is with me.)
