Walking

Tollie Red Kites – Knock Farril

We got out walking today and so we did not waste the good weather we stayed local.

We decided to use geocaching to plan the route so the first stop was Tollie Red Kites – where we did see Red Kites and a weasel.

We also drove out to Knock Farril – a site of an ancient hill fort.

The weather was so good that we got the hood down on the MX-5.

Lauder Common

Because of an afternoon conference call for a client, I only had time for a short morning walk.

There was a convenient bench up in the hills for a tea break.

I had packed my titanium meths stove for this trip – my Alpkit gas stove o-ring seal has been giving me some problems. It was completely still, when I came to make some tea later in the evening, so I sat at the picnic table and brewed up.

Woodland walking and hail

I had to work this morning on a project for a client, so I went to a nearby hotel, with good coffee, sandwiches and good wifi.

Once done the weather started to change and eventually there was a heavy hail storm. Fortunately I was still in the car, heading for some wood I know where there is some interesting walks.

I got this photo in one of the warm sunny spells between the wind, rain and hail!

Lunch was back in the car – watching the hail.

Once back at the campsite some of the hail showers looked more like snow showers. Not such a bad evening though, dinner in the watching movies on my iPhone.

Walking today

After a slow start to the day, I set off to look at a hill fort, that is advertised here at the camp site. It was not far away but I stretched the walk out to about an 8 mile loop, which included a lunch stop. The weather was excellent, but once up high I needed a fleece to stop the chill in the wind. For lunch I found a convenient wall to shelter behind to keep out of the wind, so I could make some tea using my meths stove.

Backpacking to Woodhall Spa

Saturday

Snail

Early in the day I had to share the path with a huge number and variety of snails.

Lunch

I found a quiet corner just off the path for a substantial lunch – in a cold wind and light drizzle. The poor weather did not continue, it brightened up by the time I reached Kirkstead Bridge.

Sunday morning was sunny and bright. I had breakfast with fresh coffee by the lake. Packing away is easy when carrying all the gear, I do not have much with me so it does not take long to pack up.
